Zirku Island Airport is privately operated by the Abu Dhabi State Oil Company. The island of Zirku is located approximately 160 km northwest of the capital Abu Dhabi in the Persian Gulf. The airport is mainly used to transport the oil company’s employees to the surrounding oil platforms.
The construction company Archirodon initially commissioned ADM to plan the runway extension. The aim was to extend the existing runway with a length of 1,200 m to a length of 1,920 m in order to be able to handle larger aircraft types. Due to the location of the runway, directly on the coastline, the expansion into the sea was a planning challenge. To keep the runway strip as compact as possible, we used displaced thresholds with starter extensions. This made it possible to shift the Runway end safety area “over” the end of the runway.
After the runway extension project was successfully completed, ADM was commissioned with the planning of the apron expansion, new taxiway and Terminal optimisation project.
The “airport expansion project” deals with the increased capacities. An enlarged apron enables more aircraft and helicopter positions, the new taxiway enables better maneuvering options on the ground, especially during peak hours.
The runway extension project included the following services:
Design of runway, runway strip, turn-pad design including turn-simulations, marking, lighting, runway pavement and obstacle limitation surface survey
Design of apron extension incl. new aircraft- and helicopter stands, new taxiway, taxiway strip, marking, lightning, signs, manual for passenger terminal optimization
